Skull base conditions

The base of the skull is where the facial skull borders the brain. Diseases in this region are quite rare but can have severe symptoms. Such diseases include pituitary gland tumors (or adenomas) and other tumors both benign and malignant.  Careful clinical examination is necessary to clarify the nature of such conditions, so CAT scans or MRI imaging may be indicated.

Three types of treatment are available for skull base conditions: medication, radiation, and surgery. Which is most appropriate depends on an individual’s situation.

The complexity of such conditions, the need for careful diagnosis, and the nature of the treatments means ENT Center physicians work closely with neurosurgeons, oncologists, maxillofacial surgeons and radiotherapy specialists at the Klinik Hirslanden.  Working together, we consult, organize, and carry out the needed investigation of the condition at the skull base.  This interdisciplinary consultation forms the basis for suggesting which treatment type appears optimal.
